If your truck's GVW is 55,000 or more you need to read this! You must file Form 2290 for the tax period beginning on July 1, 2017, and ending on June 30, 2018.
Who is required to file Form 2290 and pay Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax? Anyone who registers a heavy highway motor vehicle in their name with a gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more must file Form 2290 and pay the tax. Typically, owners of vans, pickup trucks, panel trucks, etc., are not required to file or pay tax on these smaller trucks. Trucks that are used for 5,000 miles or less (7,500 for farm trucks) are required to file a return but are excluded from paying the tax.
This is a required form when renewing your truck's apportioned tax with your base state. They will ask for a stamped copy of your IRS-2290 Schedule 1 form.
What is the cost of this annual tax? The cost for a 55,000 pound truck is $100 increasing for each 1,000 pounds to top off at $550 for a typical 80,000 pound truck.
What is GVW? Gross vehicle weight = the weight of the truck + the weight of the trailer + the maximum weight of the load
